This post is only valid if you watch (or are willing to watch) old Hindi movies. I love old Hindi movies. I am a big fan of Hrishikesh Mukherjee sir and a big fan of movies mostly from 1970s directed by him. Since my Christmas holidays have begun, I am watching these kind of movies so much and they help me in surviving the day so much better. These days I am a little depressed and they definitely help. I thought I’ll share some of my favorites with you today.
Disclaimer: 1. They do smell of the male-domination that our society is, but most movies are how societies are, not how they should be because they are basically an interpretation of a regular human being’s perspective only. 2.Most of them are quite predictable, so keep that in mind if that matters to you.
Let’s begin now: ๐
My all-time favorite movie! So simple, beautiful and super funny. A story of a shy guy trying to woo a girl but in the process managing to become a confident person overall. This one completely eases you and you are filled with such a good feeling afterwards.
2. Guddi:
Watch it for the simplistic charm and also for the warmth of teenage crush days.ย I had watched this in bits and always longed to watch this one. Finally, I did. Super fun, very feel good but, yes, you will be rolling your eyes at how simple this one depicts life. Life is not as simple as in this movie. ๐
3. Bawarchi:
It gives the message of spreading happiness. The story is too good to be true, yes, but if it’s good, I am okay. Very soothing, warm and peaceful.
4. Mili:
If you have to define heart meltingly beautiful, then this is it and, oh my God, Amitabh Bachhan – Jaya Bhaduri make such a cute couple in this one (I don’t use the phrase ‘cute couple’ that often so this is real ๐ ). The story might be clichรฉd but still so emotional. It’s a lot like Anand, A Walk to Remember if you know any of them.
5. Chupke Chupke:
What if your wife praises a relative 24*7? Would you ever think of proving that you are the smart-ass of the family? Haha! This is the cult favorite of its times but, honestly, I found it way too stretched. It’s quite funny but you feel like the joke is stretched for way too long! Still, I wouldn’t mind watching it every once in a while for the warm feeling.
6. Khoobsurat:
The never-ending war of discipline versus free spirits comes alive in this one with a funny family. Rib tickling, a tad bit boring towards the end.
7. Naram Garam:
It tells you how it pays to be clever in today’s world. I don’t know why it did not get as much fame as some of the other ones. It’s funny to bits, but again, a little stretched.
8. Golmaal:
Even if you aren’t into these kind of movies, you have definitely heard about this one. I was a little apprehensive about including this one as I did not enjoy it as much as I expected to. However, it’s fun enough so I thought I’ll just put it. It is quite satirical in the sense that a person has to perform so many tactics to get a job after graduation.
9. Chameli Ki Shaadi:
A satire on the situation of inter caste marriages in India and how! This is funny to the core. Also, really good performances by all the actors. It doesn’t belong to the same era as the above mentioned movies (released in 1986) but while looking for images for this post, I ran across this and thought that I would definitely include this. I also just got to know that this was directed by Basu Chatterjee, the same director who directed the first one in this list. ๐
That’s all about it. Do let me know what you watch to pep up your days (apart from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai ๐ ) and definitely let me know if you have watched any of these.
{Edit: I completely forgot to mention ‘Abhimaan’. Insecurity and male ego when your wife is more famous than you – cliched story but brilliant acting by all the actors. This is again one of my favorites and has beautiful songs too}ย
awesomeeeeeeeeeee list .. not sure a bout the rajesh khanna starrer maybe because i dont like him.. but others are a GEM and ever green just the other day I watched Gol mal …
hilarious
Haha, thank you so much. ๐ after posting this, I thought people would be like – what the heck is she talking about! ๐ but glad that you watch them too, golmaal is fun ๐

Ek ek masterpiece hai. Its weird because i rarely watch Hindi movies at length. Watch aajkal ki movies in half hour… But these are so artistic. So much detail, powerful characters.
You have good choice. I revise Chhoti Si baat very often. Not sure why ๐
Hehe, i don’t know what it is that draws us all towards Choti si Baat, but Asraani + Amol Palekar+ Ashok Kumar + Vidya Sinha = very badia combo for me!

Amol palekar and utpal datt played probably the best characters in cinemas those days. Every single movie they did, stands out. And they didn’t even try being funny… Isn’t that great?
